The musical has five main characters:
- Dorian, an aspiring model
- Norman, a photographer who falls in love with Dorian and produces an incredible photo of him that turns out to have secret magical powers
- Rose, a young photographer working at Norman's studio who falls in love with Dorian
- Rhonda, a manager who signs up Dorian and guides his career
- The Photo of Dorian, who has an identity known only to Dorian
Act 1 sets up the story through 9 songs that introduce the characters. It starts with the photo being taken and progresses to Dorian meeting Rhonda and signing up with her, wishing that he could live forever so he wouldn't age, experiencing his first fashion show, falling in love with Rose, and realizing that he has exchanged spiritual identities with the photo so that he'll never age.
The songs in Act 1 are:
| Quicker Than The Eye* |
A rocking introduction to the musical that shows a modeling session at which Norman is taking shots of Dorian. It introduces the theme that runs throughout the story: "Beauty to its beholder will never really die/As time passes him by/Quicker than the eye." |
| This Picture This Portrait* |
A show tune duet by Norman and Rhonda where they explore the picture that Norman has taken. While Norman sees the timeless beauty in the photo that should never be exploited commercially, Rhonda sees it as his "ticket to fame." Norman wins the round and gives the photo as a gift to Dorian, who is absolutely mesmerized by it. |
| The Cruelest Joke* |
A rock solo by Dorian, who sings about what a cruel joke it is to have a picture that never changes, while he himself will get old and die. In the song, he longs to change places with the photo so it gets old, while he never will. |
| Are You The One |
An strikingly beautiful love duet between Dorian and Rose. If it were done commercially with two name stars, it would be a #1 hit. |
| Under My Wing |
A show tune duet between Rhonda and Dorian where she signs him up to become a model and agrees to become his confidant and mentor. |
| This Is It |
A very catchy, up tempo rock song where Dorian makes his first splash as a model in a fashion show and loves it. When it's produced, it will be one of the highlights, featuring a high-energy cast of dancers. It has Paula Abdul or Debbie Allen written all over it and would make a fave MTV rock video. |
| Muse |
Muse is a great song -- one that many will consider their two or three favorites. In the story, Norman, Dorian, Rose and Rhonda all sing about how they need a muse to guide them in a song that moves so lightly that it almost floats through your ears. It's one of several tunes that by itself is worth the price of admission. |
| Future Starts Today |
A strong love song sung by Rose about how her future with Dorian is beginning. It's the first of two that will make almost any young actress love to play Rose in the musical. |
| Immortal* |
A stunning rock song in which Dorian discovers his immortality by conversing with his photo. It's a very powerful finish to Act 1 that should bring down the house when it gets produced. |
